UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA MUZZLES ANTI-ABORTION GROUP

The University of Alberta recently said that if the Genocide Awareness Project (GAP), an anti-abortion group, wanted to display its message on campus, it must not “make a direct comparison of abortion to murder.” Arguing that “the very essence of the anti-choice position is the analogy of abortion to murder,” CCLA General Counsel Alan Borovoy told the University that “to deprive … students of the right to promote this view is effectively to expunge the heart of their argument.” Pointing out that it takes a pro-choice position on the merits of the abortion issue, CCLA said that it seeks to maximize freedom of speech for all parties to the debate.

According to the University, the GAP display discriminated against women who had abortions. It would, therefore, violate the University policy and Alberta law. But, in the opinion of CCLA, “the contents of the poster would infringe neither” because the display did not discriminate on any of the prohibited grounds.

CCLA awaits the University’s response.
