ADOPT SAFEGUARDS FOR "NO-FLY" LISTS, GOVERNMENT URGED

Safeguards must be provided to prevent abuse of the government's proposed "no-fly" plan, a CCLA delegation told a group of government officials at an early January meeting. This comment was addressed to a government scheme that, in the interests of security, would bar some people from flying within Canada. In particular, Alexi Wood, Director of CCLA's Public Safety Project stressed the need for a process by which affected individuals could challenge such decisions. Wood said that the process should include independent adjudication. The civil liberties delegation also urged the government to publish the criteria for being placed on the list and to provide for advance notice so that those barred will not be caught unaware at any airport.

Alexi Wood was accompanied by student-at-law Motek Sherman and volunteer, Emily Kirkpatrick.
