Ontario to Change Police Complaints System
After years of criticism by community groups, the Ontario government has introduced legislation to replace the current "cop heavy" system for handling complaints against the police. The Bill, influenced by the proposals of the study done by former chief justice Patrick Lesage, provides that a civilian director, rather than the police, will initially receive complaints and then decide who will be investigating them. Alexi Wood, the director of CCLA's Public Safety Project, welcomed the government's initiative. Calling it a "step in the right direction," Wood expressed the misgiving that, under the Bill, most of the initial investigations might still be done by the police themselves.
