ANTI-GAY LETTER PROVOKES HUMAN RIGHTS COMPLAINT

In a complaint filed with the Alberta Human Rights Commission, Darren Lund charged that Rev. Stephen Boissoin had exposed persons in that province “to hatred or contempt because of” their homosexuality. The impugned remarks were contained in a letter Rev. Boissoin wrote to a Red Deer newspaper in which he criticized as “wicked” the political agenda of gay activists.

According to Mr. Lund, the letter was homophobic and in violation of Alberta’s Human Rights, Multiculturalism and Citizenship Act.

According to Rev. Boissoin, the letter simply expressed his political and religious views - a constitutional right of all Canadians. Intervening on behalf of CCLA, former acting-Director of the Free Expression Project, Josh Paterson, will argue that the Alberta human rights legislation must be construed more narrowly than Mr. Lund did; provincial human rights legislation should not be allowed to suppress a citizen’s right to express political and religious opinions, no matter how repugnant those opinions might be.
