Bible References Treated as Hate Speech

Saskatchewan resident Hugh Owens has been charged with committing hate speech after he published a controversial advertisement linking the Bible with disapproval of homosexuality. The advertisement published in the Saskatoon Star Phoenix contained four citations from the Bible followed by an equal sign and a drawing of two men holding hands inside a circle, with a diagonal line through them.

Owens was charged under a section of Saskatchewan's Human Rights Code which prohibits speech that exposes people to hatred, ridicule, or a loss of dignity based on that person's sexual orientation. Both a Human Rights Board of Inquiry and the Saskatchewan Court of Queen's Bench sustained the charges, and Owens is currently litigating the matter before the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal. Despite its disquiet regarding the contents of Owens' message, CCLA has filed for leave - to intervene The Supreme Court has not yet released its against the charge. If leave is granted, the group plans to argue that wide latitude needs to be given to adherents of all faiths and opinions to convince others of the moral correctness of their position. Special Counsel Andrew Lokan will represent CCLA.
