CCLA Calls for Independent Handling of Civilian Complaints Against Police

Appearing before the Ontario Police Complaints Review, headed by former jurist Patrick LeSage, CCLA Legal Staff member Alexi Nicole Wood called for an independent civilian body with the power to investigate, mediate, and adjudicate complaints. Ms. Wood also urged a system for independently auditing police policies and practices. Auditing is necessary, Ms. Wood said, because many people may be too intimidated to complain or, because of covert operations, they may simply be unaware that they were targeted by police.

Earlier, CCLA General Counsel A. Alan Borovoy made these and other recommendations in a private meeting with former Justice LeSage.
