Complaint Filed in Second Torture Case

Maher Arar is not the only Canadian whose torture ordeal in Syria may have been aided by the Government of Canada. CCLA has filed an official complaint over the possible role the RCMP may have played in the alleged interrogation and torture of Canadian citizens Abdullah Almalki and Ahmad El Maati at the hands of foreign governments.

According to numerous media reports, both of these men were subjected to torture by foreign investigators. Mr. Amalki was allegedly questioned in Syria about e-mail and computer passwords after his family computer had been seized by the RCMP, while Mr. El Maati was allegedly interrogated in Syria and Egypt about an Ottawa map seized at the U.S. - Canada border and a remote control bought in Toronto. The interrogators also allegedly knew particular details about his life, such as the make and colour of his car.

In letters to SIRC, the RCMP's Commission for Public Complaints, and Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Minister Anne McLellan, Alexi Nicole Wood, Director of CCLA's Public Safety Project, contended that these disturbing allegations should be investigated with the gravity and urgency they deserve. CCLA welcomed the inquiry into similar allegations relating to Maher Arar, and said there is no acceptable reason to treat these similar allegations differently. As Ms. Wood pointed out, "the allegations go to the very integrity of this country's justice system".
