Canadian Music Industry asks Parliament to impose a levy on MP3 players
Artists and musicians all over Canada have sent a letter regarding Bill C-32, the copyright bill, to the Minister of Industry and the Heritage Minister asking the federal government to impose a levy on MP3 players. This levy would be similar to existing levies found on blank CDs and cassettes, where the revenues would be redistributed later to the artists as royalties.
In the letter the artists write “…We know that you do not want to see a Canada that is devoid of musicians and songwriters, but without fair and balanced treatment, that may be the tragic consequence.” The letter is supported by many famous Canadian musicians and bands such as Nickleback, Metric and the Tragically Hip.
We can look forward to seeing how Ottawa balances the interests of the music industry when considering the copyright reform proposals of Bill C-32 also known as the Copyright Modernization Act, which is scheduled for debate at second reading at the House of Commons on Nov 2nd 2010. Read more here.
