Following the natural disaster in Haiti, the federal government has temporarily accelerated the immigration applications of Haitians with family in Canada and has allowed those on temporary visa to remain here for the time being.
However, the government has rejected calls to further relax immigration rules for Haitians or to admit more immigrants on humanitarian and compassionate grounds.
Ottawa has also brought 84 Haitian children to Canada for adoption, with more Haitian adoptions expected.
